Piano Starts Here, sponsored by KNKX and the South Hudson Music Project, is a series that Alex has been hosting and curating, along with Wayne Horvitz, since 2014. The series features many of the finest pianists in the region, performing interesting and challenging programs.
Alex’s trio releases, “On the Ground with the Alex Guilbert Trio” and “Bard Songs” are each a fully conceived musical journey, rather than just a collection of tunes. On each, Alex is joined by masterful and like-minded rhythm sections who collaborate in the spirit of the great jazz piano trios.
T.O.P. Jazz Band is a collaboration with drummer/washboardist/vocalist Mike Daugherty bringing untamed prohibition era Jazz to the people. T.O.P. is committed to capturing the rawness of the great washboard trios of Jimmy O’Bryant and Johnny Dodds, but also the polish and sophistication of the later Benny Goodman trio.
Alex is a frequent provider of live music for the region’s thriving dance scene. He can be found onstage at Swing it Seattle, the Century Ballroom, Jule’s Mae’s, the Eastside Stomp, Bellingham Stomp, T Town Swing, and many more dance events and festivals, as both a leader and sideman committed to keeping the dancers on the floor.
